Studio Rules - Health & Safety

Keeping the doors of this pottery studio open to members means collaborating with our amazing community to keep the space safe and clean.

Pottery creates dust which contains silica. In order to minimize everyone's exposure to dust the studio does have air filters in place BUT we also need members to commit to cleaning up after themselves and following studio rules.

Upon joining, you will receive in-person guidance about the studio rules. Here is an overview!

Glazing

  • All members must attend at least 1 glaze tutorial before using studio glazes
  • All pieces must be wiped or unglazed at least 5 mm from the bottom of each piece.
  • Be careful and avoid contamination between two glazes. Wash buckets are available to rinse tools!!
  • If the glazes overlap, please keep the second layer above the centerline to account for the pouring of the glaze.

Handling of ceramics and kilns

  • When adding greenware or bisqueware to shelves for firing be mindful of other pieces. If there is limited shelf space, please talk to staff about finding extra spae OR place on your shelf until space is available
  • No exterior clay unless pre-approved by kiln tech or owner
  • No touchy the kiln
  • Kiln maintenance is expensive, please be mindful of not overglazing or using unapproved materials

Good practices overall

  • ABSOLUTELY NO SANDING INSIDE! Please hang out in the parking lot or use the "sand box" if available
  • Avoid creating clay and glaze dust (e.g., do not blow on your pieces, don't flick canvas, etc)
  • Use a sponge to clean dry clay and use a mop instead of broom for messes on the floor
  • Membership will be revoked if you cannot follow rules

Cleaning & Sanitation

  • Please manage your assigned shelves as space is limited
  • Students and members are responsible for the cleanliness of their workspace and are expected to mop around their wheel/work area, wash and store all tools and equipment used, and wash/dry used plastics/tiles
  • Clean on time to free up space in time for subsequent events
