Studio Rules - Classes

Best Kind Mud Shop is a fully functional studio offering pottery classes, pottery workshops, and more.

General Guidelines

  • Firing is included for work done in our studio only. Outside work is not permitted.
We do not have the capacity to support production potters
  • Make-up classes are allowed during your session to account for illness and emergencies. These sessions must be pre-approved by instructor and owner. Make-up sessions are only available during your session time period and you are limited to two per session for 8-week classes and one per session for 4-week classes.
  • Mark each piece with your own pottery stamp or initials
  • If you would like to bring pieces created at home, please check with the tech or owner about firing services
  • Clay from outside of studio is not allowed unless explicitly approved in writing by owner
  • Pieces must be picked up within 4 weeks or they will go to heaven (or hell)- this includes bisque
  • If you are interested in selling your pieces please talk to Lisa about joining the rotating member gallery.
  • Students are not to remove tools or glaze from the studio
  • At the end of class you must remove all belongings from shelf on last day or that gets adopted by the studio
  • If you have remaining pieces to complete when class is finished, talk to management about drop-in and firing options

An additional fee is applicable on any piece exceeding the following dimensions:

6-week session

  • 20-25 pieces with the maximal dimensions: 8 inch (diameter) by 5 inch (height)

8-week session during the open studio/course

  • 15-20 pieces with the maximal dimensions: 8 (diameter) by 5 inch (height)

If the maximum size of any piece exceeds these dimensions the work will not be fired. For pieces exceeding this size, a firing service charge is applicable.

Damaged work

Pottery is a fickle beast. We are not responsible for work damaged by kiln explosions, accidents, other members, etc. Losing your work is an unfortunate part of the journey but we will allow brief cussing and temper tantrums when such accidents happen.

Food Safety

Not all glazes are food safe. Be sure to use only food safe glazes for the interior of items that will be in contact with food or drink. If you aren't sure, ask staff!
