Titanium Dioxide

Titanium Dioxide is a glaze opacifier that is also a well-known white pigment. Titanate crystallization on cooling can lead to unique variegated surfaces. More economical alternates to Titanium Dioxide for use in glazes include rutile and ilmenite, although many may select titanium dioxide as an opacifier over less expensive options in part due to its tendency to introduce variegation and crystallization to the color and texture of glazes. In moderate amounts, titanium dioxide encourages strong melts, durable surfaces and rich visual textures.
